sntv Insights – Barty retirement shocks the sporting world

Of the 8,000+ stories that sntv has distributed to media partners so far this year, the original video breaking the news of Barty’s retirement is the eighth most used to date.

It’s been just over two weeks since women’s World Number 1 and 2022 Australia Open champion, Ashleigh Barty, announced her sudden retirement from professional tennis at the age of 25.

Six of the seven stories to be used more covered the developments with Novak Djokovic, as his unique vaccine case started and concluded before the start of February’s Australian Open.

To illustrate the scale of Barty’s retirement, the original video covering the breaking news was used more than those focusing on Roman Abramovich’s initial decision to sell Chelsea Football Club before being sanctioned by the UK government, on the decision of UEFA to move the men’s Champions League final from Saint Petersburg to Paris and of Russian Olympic skater Kamila Valieva awaiting judgement on her positive drugs test at Beijing 2022.

Moreover, when compared to recent retirement announcements from other sports, Barty’s was used significantly more than those covering Barcelona’s Sergio Aguero, who was forced to retire prematurely due to a heart condition, of the NFL’s Tom Brady and of NBA icon, Pau Gasol

Notably, the original video covering the news of Barty’s retirement was used by media organisations in 61 different markets across the world. On average, tennis is the second-widest reaching sport on the sntv service, behind soccer, and comparable to basketball and motorsports.
