Alexander Zverev claimed the US Open men’s singles title with victory over Ben Shelton, while Elena Rybakina defeated Aryna Sabalenka to win the women’s crown.
Later in the month, Team Europe won the Laver Cup, with US Open champion Zverev clinching the victory against Learner Tien. The Billie Jean King Cup Finals also brought together the leading women’s national teams for another major week of international tennis.
Cycling champions crowned
Enric Mas claimed his first Vuelta a España title, securing a home victory for Spain. Attention then turned to Montreal, where the UCI Road World Championships brought together the world’s leading riders to compete for road race and time trial titles.
