Venezuela claim historic World Baseball Classic title, with SNTV delivering comprehensive global coverage

Venezuela made history by winning the World Baseball Classic for the first time, defeating the United States 3–2 in a dramatic final in Miami.

The game was decided in the ninth inning when Eugenio Suárez delivered a tie-breaking double to seal the win, after Bryce Harper had earlier levelled the score with a two-run home run in the eighth.

Venezuela had led 2–0 through Maikel García’s sacrifice fly and Wilyer Abreu’s solo home run, before regaining the lead in the ninth when Javier Sanoja stole second and scored on Suárez’s decisive hit. The pitching staff then closed out the victory, limiting the USA to just three hits on the night.

The victory marks a landmark moment for international baseball, with Venezuela becoming only the second Latin American nation to win the tournament, after the Dominican Republic in 2013.
