August brought the return of domestic soccer, major tennis titles in Canada and the start of La Vuelta a España, as another busy month of sport unfolded around the world.
Shelton and Świątek Triumph in Canada
Ben Shelton successfully defended his National Bank Open title in Montreal, defeating fellow American Brandon Nakashima 6-3, 7-6(4) in the final to claim his second ATP Masters 1000 crown. The victory made Shelton only the fourth man this century to successfully defend the Canadian title.
In Toronto, Iga Świątek claimed her first title of the season with a dominant 6-2, 6-3 victory over Elena Rybakina. The victory secured the Polish star her 12th WTA 1000 title and 26th career singles crown.
PSG Lift the UEFA Super Cup
Paris Saint-Germain continued their run of European success with a 2-1 victory over Aston Villa in the UEFA Super Cup. as the Champions League and Europa League winners met for the first major European silverware of the new season.
The English Premier League returns for a new season
The 2026/27 English Premier League season got underway in August, with reigning champions Arsenal beginning their title defence following a first league triumph in 22 years. Coventry City, Ipswich Town and Hull City joined the top flight following promotion.
La Vuelta Gets Underway
La Vuelta a España began in Monaco, with Tadej Pogačar winning the opening individual time trial to take the first red leader’s jersey. The 21-stage race continues through Monaco, France, Andorra and Spain before concluding in Granada on 13 September.
Looking Ahead to September
September brings another packed month of sport, with the US Open and La Vuelta a España reaching their conclusions alongside the Solheim Cup, Laver Cup and Billie Jean King Cup Finals. Attention will also turn to Japan, where the 20th Asian Games Aichi-Nagoya 2026 get underway on 19 September.
